Wildlife Care Academy Online Classes

Online classes at the Wildlife Care Academy are taught via Blackboard Collaborate, which bring the classroom experience right to the attendee, without having to travel! The goal of the online classes is to provide live instruction programs that allow interaction between teacher and student like a traditional classroom but via the easily accessible format of a virtual classroom.

Classes will be offered on various days of the week, including weekends, and various times of day, including lunch learning and evenings.

Technical Help for Blackboard Collaborate
The Wildlife Care Academy’s online classes are taught through Blackboard Collaborate, which requires an updated version of Java. If you are using Blackboard Collaborate for the first time, please visit this link to "Behind the Blackboard", designed for first-time users.  We strongly recommend that you test this system prior to signing up for class.

Step 1 on "Behind the Blackboard" will check to see if your operating system and preferred browser is compatible with the Blackboard platform.

Step 2 will allow you to test a "configuration room". This demo session is recommended to ensure you can access a Blackboard class, and it will allow you to test your connection, settings, and audio for class. Follow the instructions on the screen to run your audio setup wizard to test your audio, so that you can hear the instructor. For the Wildlife Center’s purposes, you will not need a microphone or a webcam.  If you are prompted to update your version of Java at any point, be sure to delete any old Java files.

If you are having trouble accessing Blackboard, please note that Step 4 on "Behind the Blackboard" will take you to a support portal, in which you can find answers to frequently asked questions. You may even submit a support ticket to the Blackboard support team; they will be able to provide additional technical support.

While Blackboard Collaborate does work on mobile devices (with the appropriate app), not all features are available on mobile devices. We recommend using a standard computer for classes to ensure that you can take advantage of all features. Additional information on viewing Blackboard with a mobile device can be found at the Learning Center.

If you have additional questions about system requirements or would like to learn more about Blackboard, please visit this page.

See this orientation video for more information as you prepare to join your Blackboard class.
