It’s not often that we know the exact hatch-date of our resident raptors at the Wildlife Center – but because Buddy the Bald Eagle has been a celebrity since he was an egg, we do know that today is Buddy’s “birthday” – or more appropriately, hatch-day!
Four years ago, thousands of online eagle fans celebrated when one eaglet hatched at the Norfolk Botanical Garden. At the end of May 2008, that eaglet was removed from the nest after a large lesion was noted on his beak. Once admitted to the Wildlife Center, the lesion was identified as avian pox – and while Buddy [then patient #08-0887] did recover from the virus, the lesion permanently deformed his beak.
Even though Buddy will never be released into the wild, he will spend the rest of his days at the Wildlife Center, serving as an education animal ambassador. Buddy has been in training to travel off-site to programs and events, and is scheduled to appear at the Norfolk Botanical Garden Eagle Festival on May 5. We look forward to many years with Buddy, our resident celebrity! Happy 4th Hatch-day!
