Happy Black Bear Parturition Week!
According to a study by Kim Echols, in Virginia, Black Bear sows have been documented giving birth from December 19 to February 22 – with a median date of January 17. It's become a Wildlife Center tradition to celebrate the bears' birthdays on this day!
This year, we’re going to tweak that tradition just a bit – we’re going to make Black Bear Parturition a Monday holiday! Help us celebrate as our cubs become yearlings.
Join us on Critter Cam on Monday, January 18 at 11:00 a.m. for the delivery of bear birthday cakes in the Black Bear Complex. The cakes will include some very special ingredients -- salmon and nuts. We'll also feature a special bear birthday video!
Then join us on Friday, January 22 at 2:00 p.m. for a special discussion with two of our wildlife rehabilitators, Shannon and Lydia. They'll give us a re-cap on the bears, including how the bears reacted to the special birthday treat menu items from birthday week.
And check in on the moderated discussion throughout the week as we take a look back at some video clips featuring the bears during this past year.
An anonymous donor has given us $500 for the bears -- for special birthday treats, as well as looking ahead to the possible need for formula for 2021 cubs we’ll admit later this year [remember, the first cub of 2020 arrived on January 28.
This is a $500 challenge gift – Critter Cam viewers are encouraged to donate during "parturition week" to support our ongoing care of the yearlings – they’ll be with us until April! – and the additional cubs that the Wildlife Center will help this year.
