The Science Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools identify academic content for essential components of the science curriculum at different grade levels, and, in conjunction with effective instruction, provide a platform for creating scientifically literate students. These standards are meant to be incorporated into a broader, locally-designed curriculum, and teachers are encouraged to go beyond the standards and select instructional strategies and assessment methods appropriate for their students.
