Environmental Education

For more than 25 years, the Wildlife Center of Virginia has presented engaging and compelling environmental education programs across Virginia, reaching more than 1.4 million children and adults. Our Environmental Education Department strives to promote positive attitudes toward wildlife and emphasize how our personal choices affect the health of the environment. We can deliver this crucial environmental message by:

  • visiting your school, library or organization
  • hosting a visit to The Wildlife Center of Virginia for a tour or field trip
  • joining you on your school’s field trip to the Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia in Staunton, Virginia

All Wildlife Center programs include up-close experiences with live, non-releasable wild animals such as hawks, owls, snakes, turtles, and opossums. The conservation themes we emphasize in our programs are drawn directly from the stories of these animals and the thousands of others who arrive at the Wildlife Center’s doorstep every year in need of care. Our programs address the problems they face – habitat loss, litter and environmental contamination, pesticides, diseases, and free-roaming domestic animals – and challenge people of all ages to take action to protect wildlife.

We offer the following programs:

  • Critters Don’t Need Litter (Litter Awareness)
  • You Are What You Eat (Food Chains)
  • Home, Sweet Habitat
  • A View from the Top (Birds of Prey)
  • Whoo’s Awake in the Night (Nocturnal Creatures)
  • A Journey Down the Appalachian Trail
  • Scales and Tails (Reptiles)
  • Wildlife Myths: The Truth Behind the “Tails”
  • Wild Winter Worlds (Winter Adaptations)

We can assist you in choosing the theme that best matches your group’s ages and interests. All programs are adapted to be age and grade specific, and are developed to complement and enhance Virginia Standards of Learning.

We also offer custom-designed programs and displays; please contact us for further information and pricing.
