Wildlife Center Admits 392 Patients in August 2011
As predicted at the end of July, the Wildlife Center was overrun with squirrels in the month of August 2011. Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee left many recently-born squirrels orphaned or abandoned in the greater Virginia area, and many of these little ones were brought to the Center for treatment.
In all, the Wildlife Center admitted 392 patients in August 2011, and 149 of them were Eastern Gray Squirrels. Luckily, Center staff members were able to coordinate with permitted rehabilitators around the state and transfer the majority of the young squirrels once they were stable enough to be relocated. Currently only 52 of our 155 active patients are squirrels.
The Wildlife Center also treated and released another large group of storm victims earlier in the month, and as a result tripled the number of Common Snapping Turtles treated for the year. [31 were admitted to the Center in August 2011, bringing the total number of snapping turtles the Center has treated in 2011 to 45 ... ]
Other notable releases in August included the now-famous Bald Eagle pair of NX and KS. NX’s second release was much more successful than her first, and after exploring the area surrounding her release point for a little over a week, she has since flown afar. Her past and current whereabouts can be followed here.
Day in and day out, the Wildlife Center relies on the support of individuals for its life-saving work. Please help!
