WCV Admits 543 Patients in May 2011
May is typically one of the busiest months of the year for the front desk and vet staff at the Wildlife Center — and this May was busiest month we’ve seen in the past few years! A grand total of 543 patients were admitted over the course of the month.
Just a partial listing of our May admissions:
- 57 Virginia Opossums
- 56 Eastern Cottontails
- 52 American Robins
- 29 Common Grackles
- 25 White-tailed Deer
- 20 Eastern Box Turtles
- 17 Mallards
- 9 Common Snapping Turtles
- 2 Great Blue Herons
- 1 Scarlet Tanager
Almost 80 percent of the patients admitted in May were young birds or mammals — some of which were truly orphaned, some of which were unintentionally “kidnapped” by well-meaning rescuers who didn’t know when to intervene. Other main causes of admission include the hit-by-vehicle or cat-attacked patients.
And the month ended with a bang. On May 31 we admitted 30 patients — our busiest day of the year thus far.
Historically, June has usually been slightly slower than May — though that’s not always the case. The staff are bracing themselves for the continued rush!
Day in and day out, the Wildlife Center relies on the support of individuals for its live-saving work. Please help!
