Veterinary Residency

Veterinary Residency in Zoological Medicine (Wildlife Emphasis)

The Wildlife Center of Virginia (WCV) began its residency in zoological medicine in July 2003. The WCV is a non-profit organization with a professionally staffed, fully equipped 5,700 square foot hospital, research, rehabilitation, and education center located in Waynesboro, Virginia.

The program is designed to prepare the resident for board certification in the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM), with an emphasis on clinical wildlife medicine, wildlife population health management, and conservation medicine (the ecological context of health). The WCV program is approved by the ACZM.

The resident will work at the WCV with the clinical wildlife cases. In addition, two months will be spent at other institutions including one month at a state or federal wildlife agency, or wildlife diagnostic laboratory. Two months will be assigned for independent study and research. The resident will be expected to conduct at least one original research project, and submit three papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Opportunities exist to be involved in ongoing conservation medicine and international projects as well as interaction with other local institutions (Virginia Tech-VMRCVM, National Zoo, Virginia Marine Science Museum).
